The Summer Help Program employs those who are graduating this year (2023) from a Jefferson County High School or a Jefferson County High School graduate who (or whose parent(s)/guardian) resides in Jefferson County is currently attending and expects to continue to attend college, university, and/or post High School vocational training on a full-time basis during the school year of 2023-2024.
At Buildings & Grounds and/or Jefferson County Fairgrounds, students will be responsible for the maintenance of landscape, facilities, parks, and sidewalks. General knowledge of tools is helpful but not necessary as interns will be taught how to safely operate equipment that will be used to perform assigned duties.
The Summer Help participant’s hourly wage is $17.25 for the first year of employment. If the Summer Help participant is selected to return for succeeding years (2nd, 3rd, and 4th*) their hourly wage will increase by 2% from the summer program wage. The Summer Help positions do not have benefits.
Program Specifications:
- The maximum duration will be 90 calendar
- Work schedule may include alternative workweek, such as Tuesday thru Saturday or Sunday thru Thursday.
- Time off during the Summer Help Program must be pre-arranged and approved by the County Supervisor. Time off during the Summer Help Program cannot exceed five (5) consecutive workdays or 40 total hours.

- Jefferson County reserves the right to terminate the employment relationship at any time with or without cause..
- Participants who have questions or concerns regarding work and other matters may talk with their County Supervisor, the Department’s Director, or the Human Resources
- Jefferson County will conduct a background check which must be successfully passed to be considered for the 2023 Summer Help Program. Jefferson County is committed to a drug-free environment and applicants may be subject to a pre-employment drug screening.
*Participation in the Summer Help Program is limited to five (5) years.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
The Summer Help Program’s duties are to perform general labor for the Jefferson County Building & Grounds Department in servicing County facilities, parks and fairgrounds.
Students in the Building & Grounds Summer Help Program will learn:
- Job skills equivalent/similar to Maintenance Technician I
- Time management
- Organization of daily tasks by order of importance
- Flexibility as duties may change from time-to-time
- General maintenance of machinery or tools that are used
- Learn to take direction as well as work independently
- Build work ethic skills for tasks that are assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Students must be 18 years old and have ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Valid driver’s license preferred
- Summer Help employees are held to the same standards of conduct as any Jefferson County Employee.
