MADRAS MARINE

Job Title: Purchaser/Sales 

Reports To: General Manager 

 

The Purchaser/Salesperson’s (Purchaser) main function is to promote the sale of boats, parts, accessories, and lawn and garden products of Madras Marine by effectively managing the receiving, merchandising, sales and customer service functions, while attaining the profit goal of the company. 

 

The Purchaser’s position is a hands-on, working position within the company.  The Purchaser runs the day-to-day parts acquisition, inventory control, purchasing, front room display and merchandising functions of the company.  The following duties and responsibilities are representative of the expectations and qualifications of the Purchaser.  Other duties may be assigned. 

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

Sales  

  • Help walk-in customers, answer phones, and determine wants and needs of customers. 
  • Inform customers of the usage, specifications and capabilities of parts/products sold. 
  • Promote add-on sales to existing customers. 
  • Quote prices to customers, the Sales and Service Departments. 
  • Develop new marketing ideas. 
  • Produce sales that meet or exceed annual projections. 
  • Stay informed of competitor products, pricing and specials.  Inform the General Manager of pertinent findings. 
  • Special Order parts are ordered in an expeditious manner.  Orders are tracked and customers (and Sales and Service Managers) are informed of status and estimated delivery dates. 
  • Service Department orders are prioritized, helping reduce wait time and increasing shop productivity. 
  • Orders are unpacked when they arrive.  Shop parts are pulled first and the shop is notified that the parts are available to them.  Customers are then notified as to their parts status. 

 

 

Purchasing and Inventory Control 

  • Analyze and monitor market changes in demand or indications of interest in new services or products. 
  • Review Product Mix with the General Manager and Service Manager at least once a year, prior to order time, to discuss any trends and expected future demand. 
  • Margin Mix is reviewed at least once a year to ensure that margins are maintained at an overall minimum level of at least 40%. 
  • Ensure that prices are updated when orders are received, and inventories are adjusted in the TCS system. 
  • Correct inventory levels in the TCS system when discrepancies are realized. 
  • Identify obsolete and overstock parts/products and develop a plan for its disposition. 
  • The Parts Department is kept in an orderly manner.  Aisles are clear and unobstructed. 

 

Merchandising 

  • Coordinate sales promotion activities, prepare merchandise displays and develop POS promotions. 
  • Front room displays are neat and clean. 
  • Merchandise is promptly received, stocked, faced and priced accurately. 
  • Displays are maintained and stocks rotated based on product demand. 
  • Ensure that advertising displays are set up and merchandise is arranged to promote sales and new product offerings. 
  • Maintain up to date promotional literature on both stocking and non-stocking items. 
  • Performs other duties assigned by the General Manager. 

 

 

MEASURES OF PERFORMANCE  

  • The level of customer satisfaction.
  • The department sales goals are met.
  • The department budget is met.  Gross Profit is maintained at a minimum of __%.
  • All customers, vendors, employees and supervisors are treated in a respectful manner.
  • All job responsibilities and tasks are covered in your absence.
  • The front room and parts crib are kept neat and clean.
  • Good time management is practiced.
  • Paperwork is completed daily, and reports are submitted on schedule.
  • Always maintains a professional manner.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires a high school diploma.  A college degree is preferred.  Requires a minimum 5 years’ experience in purchasing and sales to the public in the boat/marine or similar industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common industry journals and publications, product information and specifications, and industry data.  Ability to respond to common inquires or complaints from sales and parts personnel, management and/or customers.  Ability to effectively present verbal and written information to managers, other employees, and customers. 
  • Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions. 
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record. 
  • Qualified to safely operate a forklift and a full range of hand and power tools. 
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, talk and hear, use hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The Purchaser will be required to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. 
  • The work environment described here is representative of this job.  Work takes place both indoors and outdoors and requires the employee to be moving through various areas on a regular basis.  From this movement, the employee will encounter varying temperatures from these areas.  The noise level in the work environment is typically low.
